aged 8 to 23. The mission of Advance is to enhance the strokes, footwork, tactics, strategies, psychology, speed and stamina for all levels of player.

The Annual KW Valentines Badminton Tournament is fast approaching.
This tournament offers CASH PRIZES for A flight winners!

AED and CPR Training

Dianne Marshal from Heart and Stroke will be at the club on Saturday Jan 28th at 9AM to provide education about both CPR and use of the new AED device. The session is expected to be over by noon.

Those interested in attending are asked to sign up on the board at the club or email Eric Kendall to advise us that you’ll be attending.

Woodstock Badminton Club Receives an Automated External Defibrillator

On Saturday, December 17, 2011 an automated external defibrillator (AED) was presented to Woodstock Badminton Club by representatives from the Oxford County Emergency Medical Services and members of the John Harris family.

Purchase of the AED was funded by John’s Journey, a local charitable motorcycle ride founded by Fred Deadman in memory of his friend John Harris who passed away from a heart attack in 2008. John’s Journey has raised over nine thousand dollars for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario over the past 3 years.

Woodstock Badminton Club President Kevin Cougler accepted the donation on behalf of the club noting that this donation has helped to make the Woodstock Badminton Club a safer place to play and socialize.

In addition to the AED itself training in the use of the device will be provided to club members by Oxford County Emergency Medical Services beginning in January.

AED FACTS

Research shows that up to 85% of cardiac arrests occur at home or in public places and almost half are witnessed by a family member or friend. In Ontario alone, approximately 7,000 cardiac arrests occur every year. AED equipment in public areas is an important treatment tool.

The survival rate of victims for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is less than five per cent. However, the use of an AED with CPR before the arrival of Emergency Medical Services can increase the chance of survival by up to 75 per cent.

Heart and Stroke Foundation in partnership with Oxford County EMS have placed 45 AEDs in public spaces within Oxford County. Local Paramedics have trained more than 500 people in CPR and defibrillation since the program began.

Trillium Funding Announced

It is my pleasure to announce the success of our application for funding to the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

As most of you are aware the WBC has experienced significant problems with leaking on the courts over the past few years which is not only a risk to our players safety but jeopardizes the floor as well. As such, the club has attempted to raise money to fix the roof and solve this problem.

Eric Kendall and I formed the “Roof Subcommittee” this summer to develop a strategy and write an application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The club received notification that the application was successful to the amount of $75,000 which will allow us to install a steel roof, fix structural issues and provide insulation.
